1 vs 100
I don’t know if any of know about 1 vs 100 at all, but it is something that has interested be quite a bit over the past couple of weeks. The game is going to be released for Xbox Live Primetime, as it is being called. As the name would suggest, it is modeled after the TV gameshow 1 vs 100.
Personally, I had never actually seen the TV show before reading about the video game so after hearing about the game recently I decided to look up some clips. I’m not going to take any time explaining the rules of the actual game itself, if you don’t know what the show is watch some clips on YouTube. The part that I am really interested in is the way they are presenting the game on the Xbox 360.
The game itself is only available to Xbox Live Gold members and is completely free to play for those members. People can play a pickup game whenever they choose during the Extended Play sessions but they are just exhibition games with a computer host. The really interesting part comes with the live shows they will be having. The video game will feature a 14 week long season with live shows on every Friday and Saturday night which will be hosting by Chris Cashman, an actor and comedian.
The set of writers will be coming up with unique questions for each of the live shows so you will never get repeats when actual prizes are involved. Where on the TV show they have the chance to win $1 million, the contestant in the game will have the chance to win 10,000 Microsoft Points that they will be able to spend towards anything on the Marketplace. On top of that, there will be other prizes given to members of the mob like a select XBLA game for that week. Obviously these prizes aren’t nearly as great as the potential $1 million IRL but it is a start.
1 vs 100 is going to be bringing a gaming experience unlike any other before it. You will be able to bring you avatar into a virtual studio and interact with other people in the game. If you aren’t one of the luck people selected to be the contestant or part of the mob, you can still play along as an audience member. You can get in a party with a group of your friends so you can chat with them over while the game is being played and see which one of you gets the most answers correct. It is really trying to merge an experience that has been unique to television to the video game world and hopes to allow more people than ever to interact with each other.
If 1 vs 100 is successful and people enjoy the experience that we get from the game who knows what we will be able to see next. I think this type of game has way more potential than the Wii to hit a much wider audience and get even more people to start playing video games. I also think Microsoft has a gold mine on their hands when it comes to their Games for Windows, but I won’t get into that too much. But just imagine if they can take something like 1 vs 100 and put it on all Windows based PCs as well, that is even greater potential. They can hit the market of people that own a computer but wouldn’t spend $200 on a video game console.
Game shows have been something that have mystified American TV viewers for decades and the virtual world of video games has the ability to open up a whole new door. They can take existing shows and make it more accessible to a lot more people and they will also have the ability to create completely new game shows that wouldn’t be possible except in a virtual world.
