Is Street Fighter IV Super?

Street Fighter IV has been available to the public sense spring 2009, and I feel myself concerned about the recent announcement about Super Street Fighter IV—an updated version of the game with a rebalanced roster and eight new characters. I love the idea of a rebalance, but Capcom has not only stated that it will be a stand-alone game, but also that the roster update will be so drastic it will not be playable with current Street Fighter IV discs. This leads to some slight turbulence though, what happens to players with old copies of the game? Are we supposed to buy a completely new game? Less die-hard fans of the series will be doing this, but with casual online play, does this mean Capcom is abandoning Street Fighter IV support? Will previously purchased DLC be usable?

The necessity to buy a new disc for an upgrade does not strike me as unusual. All the iterations of the original Street Fighter II did so, and current hits like Guitar Hero and Rock Band are the same. No one is being forced to make a purchase.

Though the domestic/console releases of the game are only eight months old, the original coin-op release occurred in Summer 2008, so this update is about on schedule for a typical Capcom fighter.

I should have added this to the article, but with DLC and, I figured any enhancement/balance to the game would be some $20 add-on. Also, a feature on Gamespot essentially answered all of my questions why they were doing a re-release.

I could be mistaken, but I believe Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode 1 was $20.

“Ono explained that when Street Fighter IV was originally being developed, certain aspects of the game code weren’t laid out in such a way as to support the features that are being added in Super Street Fighter IV. While Capcom had initially considered making SSFIV’s content a download pack of some kind, it became clear that just tacking the new content onto the old game wasn’t going to be possible.”
