GolgoCast Episode 12: The Ashley Davis Interview

GolgoCast Episode 12: The Ashley Davis Interview

In today’s GolgoCast we skip the news and interview the adorable Ashley Davis of Once Upon a Pixel and Destructoid. You can see her work by going to OddLookingBird.com, or you can just google “Once Upon a Pixel”.

I believe Anthony Burch makes an appearance as well.

Prediction: Infinity Ward to Break Up with Activision

Prediction: Infinity Ward to Break Up with Activision

Before I start explaining the reasons behind this belief, let me say that this is pure speculation at this point. I also understand that most people will probably think that I am crazy on this subject but hear me out. If we trace back over the past year or so we can see signs that indicate IW may leave Activision.

First I will say that nobody expected Bungie to separate from Microsoft and return to their indie status. Yes, Microsoft has continued to publish games coming from Bungie but returning to their independent state allows them to continue their successful relationship with Microsoft yet have the freedom to work on other projects at the same time. Infinity Ward would greatly benefit from this same freedom. They might still publish future games through Activision but would be allowed more freedom with the games that they make. Last.fm is a Strange and Lovely Thing

Last.fm is a Strange and Lovely Thing

So I have been listening to music on my Xbox 360 using the last.fm app all afternoon and it is great. I didn’t think that I would every actually use the feature that much but I figured I would at least check it out and it has been very good to me.

I haven’t actually signed into my last.fm account for a couple of years but that really didn’t matter. It turns out that it is really easy to use and plays some damn good music. One of the bands in the recommended lists for me was “Kid, You’ll Move Mountains” which totally surprised me since they are a band from back home in Illinois and once that I hadn’t listened to in quite a while. I didn’t hesitate to hit “play” for that station and it has been on all afternoon.

There are a handful of bands mixed in the playlist that I recognize and like and there are a few new bands that have been pretty solid as well. But what surprised me the most was when a song by “Inspector Owl” start playing. I almost should have expected this because they are from the same place. I just never would have expected the college indie band from Dekalb, IL who I have seen several times in awesome coffee shop indie concert and whose violin player is a good friend’s older sister to randomly start playing on my Xbox.

Needless to say my last.fm experience has been a splendid one so far as I sat in my living room all afternoon on my laptop with tunes blasting on my TV speakers. If any of you have a 360 and haven’t yet checked out the last.fm I highly recommend it.

Sony Planning to Charge for PSN?

Sony Planning to Charge for PSN?

Ooh, look at that. It seems that Sony may finally start charging for a subscription to the PlayStation Network. This slide is a part of a recent investor relations strategy PDF document from Sony. There obviously isn’t a whole lot of details here but it does make it apparent that Sony is planning on charging a subscription for at least some of their content as a new revenue stream. The day may just be around the corner when Sony supporters have to start paying and stop telling the world how awesome free PSN is.

I guess it makes sense now that Sony has finally caught up to Microsoft in the number of features that the PSN has to offer that they should start charging for it. I mean, until recently the PSN hasn’t been good enough to justify charging for it.

Top 8 Worst video game top 10 lists

Top 8 Worst video game top 10 lists

Oh top 10 lists, how useless and stupid you are. One day an intelligent fellow realized people will click on anything that says ‘top 10′, probably due to the conditioning we’ve received from David Letterman. Top 10 lists should be great, if someone were to go out and do actual research they could be fun and interesting, but instead they’re used for quick content.

This is exactly what I’m doing right now, I went with top 8 simply because the article was getting too long.

1. Top 10 Street Fighter Characters

10 – Blanka
9 – M. Bison
8 – Akuma
7 – Gouken
6 – Guile
5 – Sagat
4 – Chun Li
3 – Zangief
2 – Ryu
1 – Ken

This list is absolutely meaningless, the top 10 Street Fighter characters? This list actually came out after Street Fighter 4, the same game where Ryu is a higher tier than Ken, but that is beside the point. You can certainly try and rank Street Fighter characters, but how good they are entirely depends on who the character is against as well as who is controlling them.

Case in point, Justin Wong could beat you with Dan.

Choice quotes from the list: Continue reading…

Microsoft to Receive Sales Boost due to Console Bans.

Microsoft to Receive Sales Boost due to Console Bans.

So the holiday season is upon us. Halloween has come and gone, Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and Christmas will be here before you know it. In the middle of everybody indulging in pumpkin pie Microsoft decided to ban a couple of people from playing their Xbox 360 on LIVE. Ok, it was more than a couple; reports estimate that anywhere from 600,000 up to 1 million Xboxes have been banned.

The first thing to note is that these are not Gamertag bans, they are strictly console bans which allows for the pirate to purchase a new Xbox, retrieve their gamertag, move their HDD over and continue on like nothing ever happened. Of course, they have to purchase a new Xbox for this plan to work. Continue reading…

GolgoCast Episode 11 – Shitty Quality Edition

GolgoCast Episode 11 – Shitty Quality Edition

This GolgoCast almost didn’t happen, some shit came up so we did an impromptu Ventrilo Edition GolgoCast. I couldn’t figure out how to get a better codec than 11k GSM within 5 minutes or so, and this is the product of it.

Trust me, in the next GolgoCast we will return to normal, and surprises are in store as well!
