I am not playing Modern Warfare 2

The internet has been buzzing with positivity about the newest installment in the Call of Duty franchise, yet I find myself playing Playstation 2 RPGs and 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand instead. Yesterday, I also found myself being one of the few people at school because everybody called in sick to play Infinity Ward’s newest gem. I must say, it’s fascinating to watch the gaming community get really juiced up about a game that I have no real interest in.

It’s not that I have any major objections to Modern Warfare 2. If you want to Fight Against Grenade Spam, be my guest! And, if your fighting against grenade spam or shooting civilians in an airport, I hope you’re having fun. How much fun is it? Community is a huge part of Golgotron, and fun should be shared and talked about.

Also, as a sidenote, this picture was posted online the other day and I think it actually brings up an interesting idea about First Person Shooters. And if you don’t find it interesting, I’m sure it will spur some controversy at least.

I think Josh and I might have to do a joint review of the single player of MW2 this weekend but I just want to add a comment onto this article. I can understand where you are coming from as far as progress in the FPS world goes and Puppet seems to feel the same way but I feel like I need to defend it in some way.

You first have to realize that Doom was the first FPS to ever be made. In the first 8 years developers did all sorts of things, some of them good and some bad. By the time Halo came out the FPS had evolved quite a lot from its original form. Since then developers seems to know what works and what doesn’t so the changes are smaller things that they tweak to get just right.

I think you can observe similar trends in other areas like mp3 players. When they first came out there were all sorts of different mp3 players and then there was the iPod. Since the first ipod, the device has changed drastically. But since the addition of the click wheel the changes to the ipod have been extremely minor by either adding more capacity, slightly better screen, better battery, or making the device smaller and smaller. All of this has been predictable.

But just because the changes have been predictable and relatively minor doesn’t mean that the newest iPod isn’t the best on the market, because it clearly is. In the same way, Modern Warfare 2 pretty much has everything perfected (at least in the single player experience) and is not just one of the best game in the FPS genre, or even this generation, but one of the best and most complete experiences of any video game I have played.

I have not been impressed with a single multi-player oriented FPS since Tribes 2. Nothing has come close in my mind. (Well, Forgotten Empire Legions, but that’s a T2 clone.)
Nothing of note has been added to the genre in over a decade; Halo perfected what I would call the standard meat-and-potatoes FPS and improvements since have been marginal at best. Master Chief starred in the last FPS worth buying.
Maybe I’m old, but the genre started to lose its luster around the time of Quake.
