Maybe Tim Schafer should have made a modern war sim…

In the world of video games, Tim Schafer is a man that the industry claims to need no introduction. He is the man responsible for games such as Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and most recently, Brutal Legend.  He is a man known for his comic dialogue and imaginative worlds, but should he be working in the video game industry?

Review: Super Mario Kart

Review: Super Mario Kart

Nintendo recently released the first game in the Mario Kart series to its Virtual Console download service for the Wii. Super Mario Kart fills one of the last holes in the SNES Virtual Console marketplace leaving only the likes of Starfox and Earthbound being demanded by old school SNES fans. While Super Mario Kart was one of the great games for the SNES, it did not age nearly as well as games like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, or The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Windows Games on Demand: Not Good Enough

Windows Games on Demand: Not Good Enough

I really want to keep this article short enough so somebody actually reads it but I fear that I have too many ideas in my head about the subject and this post will quickly turn into a wall of text. I do want to say that it is great to finally see Microsoft making some improvements to its Games for Windows – LIVE system with the addition of Games on Demand, but it has a long way to go.

For starters, the name sucks balls. Games for Windows – LIVE Games on Demand. You can’t expect people to keep typing or saying that shit all the time. The second major issue is the LIVE logo itself. This complaint applies to both GFWL and the Xbox 360. That shitty orange logo back from the original Xbox is disgusting and needs to be replaced. Everything on the 360 is smooth with white and green and that orange sticks out something fierce. Continue reading…

Tinker Initial Impressions

Tinker Initial Impressions

So Microsoft finally updated their Games for Windows LIVE software this week adding the Games on Demand feature that has been on the Xbox 360 for a short while now. I am planning on writing up a longer post about Games for Windows as a whole later but I wanted to say a few things about this new game, Tinker.

The greatest thing about Tinker is that it is completely free to play. Tinker is also exactly the type of game that you would expect to see on XBLA. I actually wish the game was on the 360 so I could play it on my TV as well as talk in a group chat over LIVE. I will say, however, that Tinker is a good sign of what is to come to Games for Windows.

Congratulations to Gearbox Software

Congratulations to Gearbox Software

In case you hadn’t heard, 2K Games announced that they have officially sold 2 million copies of Borderlands worldwide across all systems. This is fantastic news for Gearbox, the developer of the game, and congratulations are in order to the entire team.

Michael Pachter had previously predicted that the game was going to die due to its inconvenient release date this holiday season amongst a handful of big hitters. Fortunately for Gearbox, Pachter was wrong on this one. Selling 2 millions copies is great for any game, and especially so for new IP. Congratulations Gearbox.

Mass Effect 2: Best Voice Cast Ever.

I know I mentioned this on the latest podcast but it sounds like people stopped listening due to Josh’s incoherent accent that he spoke in the entire episode. Because of this I feel the need to actually make a post explaining how amazing the voice cast for Mass Effect 2 is really going to be.

Before I start, however, I need to explain the biggest upset from the VGAs this year. All the awards (with except of Jack Black for “Best Voice”) were simply atrocious. Why the fuck would Megan Fox get best female performance, Hugh Jackman to get best male, and the Wolverine game to get the “Best Cast” award. I will admit that I didn’t play the Transformer movie but if her performance in the movie is indicative of her video game performance, then it is not award worthy in any way. As far as Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast go, all they did was grunt, make noises, and recycle dialog almost directly from the film, which was complete shit. I find the game itself fun but the voice acting is like shit on a stick. Continue reading…
