GolgoCast Episode 21 – The podcast finally arrives

GolgoCast Episode 21 – The podcast finally arrives

This week’s podcast was released late because of a combination of laziness and shame. Listen to the tales of a bunch of drunken fools as they try to talk seriously about videogames, love, and life.

Or really just videogames.

The Curse of the Video Game Movie

The Curse of the Video Game Movie

This topic is as cliche as the Guitar Hero franchise, but it has to be said…

Hollywood looks to many sources of inspiration when developing movies. Everything from novels, short stories, fairy tails, and comic books. Within the last twenty years, or so, video games have also become a source of inspiration for Hollywood script writers. Most who fancy themselves both movie goers and gamers would normally be elated by the idea of their favorite stories being crafted for the silver screen. But, as any gamer or film buff would tell you, Hollywood hasn’t been able to get it right!

"Black" Creator Making New FPS… Who Cares?

"Black" Creator Making New FPS… Who Cares?

So this dude’s name is Stuart Black and he was the Senior Designer for the Xbox/PS2 title “Black” when he used to work at Criterion. When news hit last week that he is the lead on a new FPS being developed by Codemasters people got excited for some reason. To be honest, I have no idea why anybody would think this is good news. Did everybody else play the same “Black” as I did because it sets the bar for mediocrity in every way.

Stuart Black has been talking about his discontent at the shooter genre lately, specifically cover based shooters, saying that they are “fucking boring.” Can this guy seriously play Modern Warfare 2 and say that he was bored? He also said, “you’ve just got to sit there and wait for him to pop his head up. Pops up, couple of bullets to his head, pops back down again.. and I’m waiting for him to pop back up again.” I don’t what games this guy is playing but they clearly aren’t the same games I am playing. When this guy makes a game that actually changes the shooter genre then I will pay attention to what he has to say. Until then he can just shut the fuck up and focus on making better video games.

FFXIII Update: Real Xbox 360 Screenshots

FFXIII Update: Real Xbox 360 Screenshots

If you read this site then you probably remember the article I put up last week about Square Enix putting out some doctored Xbox 360 screenshots through their online press kit. It took them long enough but they finally got actual screenshots from the Xbox 360 version of the game. You can head over to Kotaku to see the full gallery or hit the jump to see one comparison shot. Always better, always faster, always more addicting

Always better, always faster, always more addicting

If you’ve been following Golgotron for a while now, you know I love games that are relatively mundane, but eternally playable (I wrote about Persona 3 being awesome because of it). Strangely, I’m not a huge fan of MMOs though. Games that are similar to MMOs, but without the massive multiplayer, however, are some of my favorite titles. Pokemon Platinum has been my current time waster lately (you know, because it’s mundane and extremely playable). After playing through it and putting it down a year ago, I haven’t thought about the series aside from anticipating Heart Gold and Soul Silver (coming out in three weeks). But, I had nothing else to play and figuring there were some legendary Pokemon left so I picked it up planning to kill a day getting everything ready to trade-over into the next game. Then I figured I’d play Pokemon LeafGreen on GBA to prepare for the next game. Then I purchased Pokemon Emerald to prepare for the next game… Continue reading…

I'm still not good at games… or How COD:MW2 taught me that I still suck!

I'm still not good at games… or How COD:MW2 taught me that I still suck!

Camper, Tuber, hacker, cheater, n00ber, rusher, knifer, AWPer, Lagger, Waller, Flamer, Spammer… Sure. But insult my hospitality, oh no you didn’t!

In the hostile seedy underbelly of competitive online FPS gaming you can sometimes feel the rage emanate from the adolescent ‘Boom-headshotters’ as they continually crouch over your dead body to make you feel like less of a man. From the mountain dew stained camo cargo short wearers of your local lan center to the headset commandos with fully optimized gear in darkly lit man-caves across America, people love letting loose a few electronic bullets into any punk that crosses their path. And its come to be a sad truth that with any online shooter experience that your night just might be spent with people who will just yell into the mic “reach-around” a thousand times, people that go around knifing only teammates, or people that complain after every time they get killed.

Random Character Death: The Problem with Mass Effect 2

Random Character Death: The Problem with Mass Effect 2

If you listen to our podcast (GolgoCast, listen, srsly) then you know that I have wanted to talk about Mass Effect 2 for a few weeks. Much to my chagrin though, Cory hasn’t played it yet, and probably won’t in the near future. Since I can’t talk about the game on GolgoCast, I decided to write a little ditty about a disappointing part of the game. Note that THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS. And it’s also not for Corys.

If you know anything about Mass Effect 2 then you probably know that the whole game builds up to a major “suicide mission”. Most of the game is spent recruiting and gaining the loyalty squad members in hopes that you will survive the mission of the suicide. If you don’t recruit all the squad members, or gain their loyalty, there is an increased chance that members of your squad may die during the mission… including Shepard. Continue reading…
