Final Fantasy XIII: The Long Awaited Review
If you listen to the podcast or visit the forums then you probably already know my opinion on Final Fantasy XIII. The reason I am finally writing an “official” review is because other people (Molly) have failed to do so. In the interest of full disclosure I will admit that I didn’t finish this game. I got 20 hours in and just couldn’t take it anymore. I really don’t want to turn this into a huge flame war; I have learned that that never gets anywhere. I am going to stick to the parts of the game that I think are good. Anything I don’t talk about can be assumed to be bad.
Surprisingly, one thing that I like about the game is its linearity. Certain games work in an open-world environment and other games work better as a linear adventure. I think that making FFXIII linear was actually one of the better decisions the team made. If the characters and the narrative were stronger then I think it would have been a treat to be taken on a ride through the worlds of Pulse and Cacoon.
The second thing that I really like about FFXIII is the battle system. At first it seemed like being able to change your class in the middle of battle would just make things too easy, but I realized that it actually adds a whole new level to the game. Before you battle you are able to customize different combinations of classes between the characters. I actually really enjoyed having to balance classes to get enemies in their “Stagger State” in order to deal massive damage, all the while making sure the party stays alive. Aside from one part where the game forces you to play two people that are a logistical nightmare, Square really hit the nail on the head with the battle system.
And that is where my praise of this game ends. All of the characters feel one-dimensional and the summons seem cold and dead. The character animations are so exaggerated, it’s almost unbearable to watch. The story itself seems interesting, but in the 20 hours that I played I still don’t really know what fal’Cie and l’Cie are despite the fact that the characters say those words every 20 seconds. At least the game is better than FF X-2.
I should also mention that I played the Xbox 360 version of the game, though I can’t imagine the game is any different on the PS3 aside from the obvious graphical enhancement. I also want to mention that I have had several people tell me that the game gets really good after Chapter 11. The only way playing Final Fantasy XIII any longer than I did would be worth it is if it turned into a woman and gave me a blowjob.
So, in summary:
The Good – Battle System
The Bad – Everything Else
Score: 4/10

“The only way playing Final Fantasy XIII any longer than I did would be worth it is if it turned into a woman and gave me a blowjob.”
Are they working on that?
