Rumor Time: Team Ico Collection in Glorious HD

The interwebs are abuzz with rumors lately of something pretty awesome: Ico and Shadow of the Colossus being remastered and released in HD for the PS3, similar to how God of War 1 & 2 were just this last year. Sony had polished the first two games in the God of War series by converting them to HD and adding trophies for each title just in time for God of War 3’s release. Now it seems very likely that Team Ico games are going to get the same treatment in anticipation for The Last Guardian.

I’m not quite sure where these rumors originated, but nearly every reputable gaming blog/news site out there is reporting the possibility of these games being remastered and bundled for the PS3. To be honest, this rumor doesn’t seem very outlandish. In fact, after the God of War Collection came out, I contemplated what other PS2 titles they could convert to HD and rerelease for the PS3 as well. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were the first two games that came to mind, and I figured at that point it was only a matter of time before they’d be announced. Other possibilities I thought of were Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and San Andreas, and possibly Final Fantasy X and XII. I’m sure there are tons of other games out there that could get the same treatment, and I’m sure the profit that the God of War Collection saw gave other game publishing companies incentive to follow in Sony’s example.

Personally, I’m very much excited for the possibility of this Team Ico Collection. I’m a bit of a trophy-whore, I will admit, and I’d probably play the crap out of these games to accomplish everything I can. Plus, seeing all sixteen Colossi battles in HD on a nice 42” LCD TV is going to be nothing short of amazing. What other games would you guys like to see remastered and rereleased on a current-gen console?

This is fantasic news! I own ICO and Shadow, but even with the upscaling of the PS3, they still look like crap on an HDTV. The games ran in a really low res to begin with. You can only make a crappy low resolution look so good.

While I’m a fan of remastering to a point, I hope it doesn’t go overboard with re-releases. I remember back when you’d buy a DVD, and 3 months later another version came out, followed by another one 3 months after that.

I’m all in favor of classics getting an HD make over. Obviously Final Fantasy 7 would be fantasic to see an HD remaster.

Atlus did a really nice job remaking Persona on the PSP. I hope they do Persona 2 as well. Lunar was just recently redone for the PSP, I heard they did a nice job on that as well.

This would be amazing, I’ve always came so dam close to buying a ps2 just to play these two games. I think the rumor started with 1UP’s interview with Fumito Ueda at TGS.

I’d like the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy in HD on 1 disc.
but then again I haven’t played them in a long long time, and people would probably rather emulate them to save money. Do you think this only works for ps2 generation games?

@OfManNotMachine: Actually, Shadow of the Colossus looks pretty freaking good on the PS3 as long as you smooth the graphics and change the screen view… I can’t remember what exactly the screen view should be set at, but the game looks much more crisp and as close to HD without being HD as it could look.

@Joe: Yeah, I think it’s pretty much given that they’ll only be remastering and rereleasing PS2 games… They’ve been rereleasing old PS1 games on the PSN store, so I can’t see why they would remaster them and then sell them again in a store.

A series I’d love to not only seen remastered. (But also completed) is the Legacy of Kain series.

There was to be a 6th game called Dark Prophecy, but it was canned about halfway thru.

Am I the only person that could care less about these games getting a coat of make-up and being re-released?

Don’t get me wrong, Ico and Colossus were great games, but do they really need to be converted over to HD for the PS3? I would rather play a NEW game instead of old games that I have already played. But again, maybe that is just me.

Also, is the PS3 devoid of titles that Sony really needs to re-release PS2 games with an HD make-over? Microsoft isn’t doing this for any Xbox games and I can’t imagine they are planning any. Then again Xbox 1 games already supported 576i/p, 720p, and 1080i.

@NamelessTed: Not to mention the 360 is actually backwards compatible(for the most part)

I don’t know if owning a ps3 and not a ps2 makes me a rare type but there seems to be a market for it.

Exactly, Joe. They’re rereleasing a lot of games for people partly because most PS3s aren’t backwards-compatible, and it’s also marketing for a new game.

God of War Collection > God of War 3

Team Ico Collection > The Last Guardian

It makes sense and people will be like, “Oh well, I never played GoW1 or 2 but 3 looks amazing and I don’t want to have to fish out my PS2 and go buy the games used somewhere, so I’ll just buy this shiny new HD version of both games for the PS3!”
