Dirty Details: The New Standard for “Good Graphics” in Games

Graphics in games will keep improving- but not in the same way that you are use to. That’s right! Curious to find out just what I mean? Well then put on your thinking cap because I have another video special for your eyeballs!

The Dirty Details is an ongoing series where Joe dissects and rants about whatever he feels like. Then he makes it look pretty — just like Tom Goes to the mayor.

I whole-heartedly agree. But it will also be interesting to see how the 3d engines and developing softwares will improve over time. This could stimulate more realistic graphics through easier means. It’ll be interesting to see how the ~artistic developers respond to that.

Good stuff as always, Joe. It definitely makes you wonder if people would give half as much a shit about L.A. Noire if it didn’t have the facial tech. Same with Heavy Rain. I think Heavy Rain may have been stigmatized by it’s graphical quality before the game ever released. Granted, the game would have been better if it played like a game instead of an extended God of War boss fight, but it did seem very pretentious in how real it was trying to look, at the expense of other key factors.

Excellent video, Broseph! Totally radical!nnI… I’m not good at making fun of a bro ._. nnI definitely feel like we’ve hit a graphical plateau. There’s only so much more realistic we can get with our design before it’s too much. Instead of focusing on making a “realistic looking” video game, they should figure out a way to incorporate the aesthetics into their overall design. You can make a pretty, and interesting, and good game without having to resort to too much realism. For instance; Pokemon! Minecraft! Professor Layton! Fez (if it’s any good). Also, if you’re gonna make a realistic game, make sure it works well! Portal 2 is amazing not because it is realistic but because every single pixel has a purpose. That, and good writing, good animations, and good voice acting.

Excellent points. I think this is how many people view Art in general, if it is realistic, it is good, etc. nnBut what about soul? Does it have soul? Look at the recent Zemeckis cartoons and how they look and animate “realistically,” but are severely lacking soul…those dead eyes…like doll’s eyes…nnAnother example would be the “classic” Street Fighter: The Movie game, and the discrepancy between realism and soul.
