Golgothoughts – Developers, Please Stop Listening To Fans

Once again, Capcom is being pushed in a direction they did not want to go due to pressure from “fans”. This is how we ended up with Street Fighter IV instead of an advancement from Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. This is how we ended up with Final Fantasy IX instead of an advancement from Final Fantasy VIII. This is how we ended up with Final Fantasy XIII-2, and now this is where we are getting Resident Evil 6.

Don’t get me wrong, none of the games I’ve listed are bad games. Capcom and Square-Enix don’t make bad games very often. There was a time where these companies would make games and we would enjoy and play them. These were the days before the entitled children took over the comments sections of every entertainment related website. No, these companies don’t have a reputation for making bad games, but what they do have though are two of the more polarized and vocal fan-bases.

In a small way I feel bad for the developers, who must feel some sense of pride in their work, only to have it completed trashed by so-called fans because they tried to push a franchise forward. The worst part is that they aren’t hearing the immense praise the rest of the fan-base is giving them because positive feedback is often swept under the rug. Marketing teams look to fix problems usually, instead of reinforcing what works, and that is all too apparent in the return-to-our-roots, you-spoke-we-listened, Resident Evil 6.

I will buy, play, and enjoy this game, just as I did with RE5 and RE4, Street Fighter IV, and Final Fantasy IX; but I will know this is not a product of a proud team looking to evolve their franchise and work but rather an attempt to appease the bitching masses. They will ultimately fail in that effort because the whiny, spoiled children are undoubtedly going to complain when you, once again, can’t run and aim (like you can in real life).
