Wii MotionPlus shows its muscle

Now that the new Tiger Woods released on the Wii (with the Wii MotionPlus accessory), some of you have figured out the MotionPlus doesn’t totally suck. Since the Golgotron crew is so f’ing cool, we figured this out a long time ago… like a whole week ago at E3.

Check out this video comparing how the system tracks the Wii Remote with and without the MotionPlus.

Now, you might decide that EA just sucks at programming or decided not to put any effort into making the game work without the MotionPlus, but that’s obviously not true. All you have to do is ask yourself “when has EA ever steered me wrong?” Seriously, the only explanation is that the Wii is absolute crap unless you get the MotionPlus. With that said, let me pimp some shit…

So now that E3 09 has wrapped up I thought it would be nice if we shared some photos before everyone stopped caring. I already posted the Destructoid Party photos so I won’t repost them here, but those are the only photos missing. My absolute favorite photo is below:

So there weren’t that many booth babes this year, but I did my best at capturing as many of them as possible. I’d like to think I got all of them except the Ninja Gaiden girls, somehow my camera screwed up and their photo came out crappy. They weren’t that hot anyway and you’re honestly not missing much. Trust me.

By some miracle of God I’ve managed to charm my way into the Konami press conference. I did so by making friends with I kindly PR rep named Marissa, and not relying on Alon’s shoddy bracelet making skills. So if you’re one of the constant few who continue to give me shit about not sneaking into the Sony conference (see here), now would be your opportunity to shut the fuck up.

The big rumor rolling around was that Kojima was coming stateside to announce that he’d be taking the wind from Iga’s sails and revamp Castlevania. In actuality he came to announce four new titles, three of which, were (of course) part of the MGS franchise. Metal Gear: Arcade was up first and based off what they were eluding to the game’s going to work much in the same fashion as the shooter style coin-ops of the early 90’s (ala Terminator 2: Arcade). They also mentioned something about it being in 3D, but I wasn’t really paying attention, as there were somewhere in the neighborhood of ten stupid-hot Japanese girls to my left. Oh, the rapture of the Shibuya crowd! *sigh* Moving right along, the next game demo’d was Metal Gear: Peace Walker, a direct sequel to MGS 3. Yay! More Naked Snake… To this, Kojima made it a point to push the fact that he’d be not only writing the script but also directing the PSP addition. Hmm, it’s at this point that I started to question a few things. One, how much is Sony paying him to help ensure that the PSP Go doesn’t flop as hard as the PSP’s initial release. And Two, how was a guy who’s known for his dedication to working on a single project going to be able to divide his time into two major releases (the other being the worst kept secret ever, Castlevania). I wonder…

Last of the three was MGs: Rising, which is being touted as the future of the series with Raiden taking the helm. Again, nothing was shown, it was essentially the exact same trailer we saw at the Microsoft press briefing two days prior. Finally, the big reveal! Obviously it was the new Castlevania that everyone had been talking about, we all knew it. But I’ve got to say that didn’t take away from the excitement in the slightest. The trailers been up for a while now, so there’s not much point in me describing it. It looks a lot like many of the action games of this generation, with most of the mechanics being lifted from God of War. I was actually hoping for a more unique look, like MGS4 in medieval times, but as always, my wish was not granted. Now, I don’t want to say the design is “cartoony,” because it’s obviously not. It’s just not as dark or Gothic as the DS incarnations. I mean if you’re wandering around a country that’s being oppressed by an evil vampire-lord, would it really be that bright or vibrant?

Aside from the visuals, we did learn some interesting tidbits from the video. First, the story will play a more integral part of the game. They’ve tried to make this more of a focal point with the last few 3D additions to the series, but they’ve always come out stale. This time with Foxhound leading the story, I have high hopes. After all, if they can make the MGS storyline tie together in a coherent fashion, well… fuck! They can just about make anything work. The game was also mentioned to have more of a sandbox environment, giving the player more opportunity to explore the world surrounding Castlevania. We also learn that the main character’s name is Gabriel, and being a “revamp” I’m guessing he’s not a Belmont. Finally, were given a cast list, which I was very much into, enlisting the vocal talents of Jason Isaacs, Robert Carlyle, and Patrick Stewart. Captain Picard, come on!!! That guy captained a fucking starship, so I’m damn sure he can take on some vampires.

The trailer ended and Kojima stepped up to the podium one last time to introduce the “producer” of L.O.S… and the bottom drops out. I knew it was too good to be true! Kojima doing a Castlevania? WOW! That would be great!!! Yeah, it would be great, but its not going to fuckin’ happen. As it turns out, he’s sticking with his cash-cow and not the new Castlevania. In his stead, and simply under his company name, production will undertaken by MercurySteam, a new company out of Madrid. Time will tell on how this all plays out, 2010 is a long way away, and a lot can happen with this game before it’s finally released. So before I go spouting off and making judgment calls that I’ll regret later, I’m backing off and leaving you with a nice gallery.

Perfect Dark Premium Theme for LIVE Gold Members

So Major Nelson posted a twitter update yesterday with some information on Perfect Dark. As you should be able to interpret from his post, Perfect Dark will be coming to XBLA this winter and will be running in full 1080p. Nothing else was mentioned about the game in regard to pricing or added features, but I have heard from another source that they are working on adding online play to the game – as would be expected.

One other small tidbit of news is that the Perfect Dark Premium Theme is now available to download to all Xbox LIVE Gold members for absolutely free. Check it out on your Xbox or just add it to you download queue by going here.

And now for a special treat… More fucking lines. I’m starting to believe this press gig isn’t all it’s cracked up to be… Save for the occasional open bar party. But I digress, we just got in to the special Square-Enix (pronounced Squeeenix if you listen to Josh) and I’ve got to say these people need to get their shit together. We were already fifteen minutes late starting and then they took to seperating the group into two lines for no inherent reason. I seriously doubt they need to distribute the weight of 75 people in a theater that holds 400. Regardless, they ushered out a couple vp’s and FF 14’s director and had a quick Q&A session. In which it was made abundantly clear, that despite Sony’s attempt to prove who’s dicks’ bigger, FF 14 is hardly going to be a PS3 exclusive. I absolutely hate telling Alon he’s right… Ever… But it does certainly seem as if the promises made at their briefing are starting to unravel.

The panel did it’s best to remain completely ambigous about any real information in regards to the game. And if at all possible made me want to play it less. They did spend a substantial amount of time discussing combat and economy, to the sum of their answers came to “… We knows it’s in there, but we’ve got no fucking clues. … Oh, it’s a story about growth.” Bah! I came here for Kingdom Hearts 3… To hell with this! Valve up next!!!!

Nintendo: UR MR GAY 2 Announced.

Not much else to say here, just wanted to mention it and post the video. Super Mario Galaxy was one of the very few games on the Wii that amounted to any amount of fun so the second game coming out is cool. It is kind of interesting that they are going with “Galaxy 2″ rather than a new name but whatevs. Check the video:

Steve Wiebe Attempts to Regain Donkey Kong Record LIVE!

I almost forgot. It is E3 and right now Steve Wiebe is trying to get the world record at Donkey Kong once more. Go watch it. Its going to take him a long time but its going to be exciting, he is so fucking good at it.

Steve was at about 175,000 points and the power seems to have cut out. If this was going to happen at least it happened early. It sounds like they are working on fixing the issue right now and hopefully they will be able to get it back up and running shortly and let Steve start over and try again.

The machine is back up and running so you can view it live again. As of right now he is only at 40,000 points and the sounds isn’t working for me. Hopefully there won’t be any more power outages and sounds should come back on soon.

Steve is at about 280,000 points right now. He hasn’t lost a life yet and sounds still doesn’t work from the stream. He is pretty much kicking ass though.

Steve is at 960,000 points right now, he is getting fucking close. He has died twice and its gettin all crazy sauce.

It is over. Steve hit the kill screen but didn’t get the record, he came close though. His final score was 989,400.

Sony ready to wiggle and waggle with motion control

Sony’s jumping on the motion control bandwagon, just like everyone else.

Time for Alon to complain, right? Actually, Sony has a tried and true history of showing truly awesome stuff at the big shows. This year was no exception. They may have stolen the motion control idea, but holy damn did they do it right… In R & D, anyway.

That’s the kicker. They always show AMAZING shit from R & D, but when the resultant product finally hits the shelves, it’s never as good as it the original vision. So I’m torn. The industry is ready for true, 1:1 motion control (which they both claimed and clearly demonstrated), and the technology is surely cheap enough that it could become a reality to consumers. Hell, even the software developers have had enough time with the Wii to come up with some really good ideas.

This thing could completely rock your casbah. Unfortunately, history predicts that it won’t, but boy am I hopeful.

PSP Go: What the Fuck is Sony Thinking?

Seriously, $250? Sony really doesn’t have a fucking clue what the hell they are doing. The original PSP launched in the US at the same price point and people thought it was crazy then, and it is still crazy now. Sony wonders why the fuck nobody buys there shit these days when all they need to do is look at their competition. I can buy a fucking Xbox 360 for $50 LESS than the PSP Go and the Nintendo DSi sells for only $170.

Aside from the fact that the new PSP Go looks like Eric Cartman, they haven’t changed anything that would make it more expensive from what I can tell. They put in the 16GB of memory but they removed the UMD drive and that is about it. Because of these minor changes, I can’t understand how they can increase the price to $250, especially when the currently PSP 3000 sells for $170 and you can buy a 16GB SD card for $30. If I am doing my math correctly I am only coming to a total of $200, and then you have to factor in that not manufacturing the UMD drive would have to cut manufacturing costs.

The PSP Go continues to prove to me that Sony is completely out of touch with the consumer.
