Golgothoughts – THQ Needs More Things Like CheapyD DLC

Golgothoughts – THQ Needs More Things Like CheapyD DLC

The rumor going around about THQ looking to sell to a Chinese investment company and canceling their 2014 lineup is probably true. I mean, how many years can you get by with WWE and Warhammer games being your flagship franchises? It’s a shame really, as I only came to respect THQ in the last year after finally getting around to Darksiders, and thoroughly enjoying WWE All-Stars and Saints Row: The Third. They’re also publishing the Obsidian-developed South Park game which looks fantastic, so hopefully they hold out as long as they can. I really think if they just focused more on what people like and less on collecting IPs to publish and lose money on, THQ could complete the turnaround they started early last year.

For now, revel is the wonder that is the CheapyD homie in Saints Row: The Third.

Golgothoughts – Street Fighter Is Older Than Crack

The Street Fighter franchise turns 25 this year, which got me thinking about what didn’t exist when Street Fighter hit arcades in 1987.

Golgothoughts – Capcom Should Have Never Closed Clover

Golgothoughts – Capcom Should Have Never Closed Clover

First, a little background. The closure of Clover Studio by Capcom a few years back was seen as a bad idea in the view of many video game enthusiasts. Having only scratched the surface of their potential, they developed the fantastic Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, and Okami, before getting the boot from Capcom. Put simply, the team splintered off and ultimately Platinum Games came from that closure, and has since given us some of the more memorable and unique gameplay experiences with Bayonetta, Vanquish, Mad World, and Infinite Space. They’ve even been tapped to work with Kojima on the next Metal Gear Solid game.

So why bring this up now? Go play the Asura’s Wrath demo and tell me Capcom isn’t missing Clover Studio right about now.

Golgothoughts – Kid Just Jams For A While

I loved Bastion. I walk around narrating my own boring life now and it automatically seems more adventurous; not that eating week old pizza and Matrix-dodging STDs isn’t adventurous, mind you.

“Kid tells her he’s putting on a jimmy hat, but his pappy didn’t raise no fool.”

Golgothoughts – Has Microsoft ever used Kinect?

Golgothoughts – Has Microsoft ever used Kinect?

The Kinect is an interesting piece of tech. It shoots out lasers (over 9000!) to find the distance from your Dorito-crusted gut hair to the depths of your belly button. It makes your hands glow purple so you can give yourself a wizard-job on camera. It even allows you to post flattering poses of yourself playing stupid games to your favorite social network (MySpace foreva!!). It can’t do any of these things though, if you put a FUCKING SWEATBAND OVER THE LASER CASTING EYE. Jesus Microsoft, how much do you pay your ad firms to make you look like you don’t know how your products work?

Pokemon: Shades of Gray Version (An Exercise In Critical Thinking)

Pokémon. Many a video gamer has grown up on the series, whether the first Red and Blue games on the Game Boy back when Nintendo was king, or the contemporary fourth and fifth generation on the DS. And with the series still going, people will perhaps continue to do so into the future. Still, the classic Pokémon has a special place in our hearts.

Maybe that’s why we don’t think about the world of Pokémon that hard. It has a light-hearted atmosphere, an innocent charm that deflects concentrated attention from the fine details and encourages us to simply have fun playing through the games.

Let’s push aside the nostalgia and give it some scrutiny, shall we?
