In true Street Fighter fashion, Capcom has released its latest iteration of the Street Fighter 4 mobile franchise with Volt. Keeping in line with Capcom’s strategies, heralded by way of console big brother, SF4: Volt features an updated and rebalanced version of the original game, alongside the addition of three new character (Balrog, Vega and Cody), and Wi-Fi supported online play. One might notice that nothing included in this new release truly warrants anything more than an app update, and if you noticed that… you’d be right!

I’m a huge Capcom fanboy, and I have no problem shelling out my hard-earn bucks to support the cause and all, but this one’s a little ridiculous. So far I’ve really not noticed a single improvement at all in Volt, in fact it’s actually quite laggy. Luckily, Capcom is putting on one of its weird sales, where each day the price goes up a buck till it caps at $6.99. So if you’re really that inclined you can pick it up for $1.99 today. Honestly though, unless your that much of a Vega fan, don’t bother. Pics after the jump…

Have you played all the way through to three stars on every single level for Angry Birds weeks ago and now find yourself strung out like a heroin addict looking for the next fix? If you are an iPhone or Android owner, the cure for the itch is here. Rovio Mobile has released Angry Birds Seasons just in time for your in-laws to show up for the holiday season.

Angry Birds Seasons features 25 new winter-themed levels. All 25 levels will not be immediately available, as they are being unlocked one level per day until December 25th. There is a large present that is grayed out on the level selection screen, indicating that there may be some kind of reward on December 25th for those who get three stars on all 25 levels. The winter-themed levels introduce a couple of new elements with blocks of snow and presents for bonus points. This is a welcome addition to the game, as it changes how you sling shot your birds at the bastard river pigs that stole your eggs.

In addition to the 25 winter-themed levels, there are also the 45 levels themed for Halloween. All 45 of these levels are immediately available to play. Apple owners will need to pony up $0.99 for the iPhone and iPod Touch, while iPad users will be paying $1.99 for their copy of the game. Android users, on the other hand, will get the game for free but will need to put up with pop up advertisements and 15 second commercials. I personally have an iPod Touch and an Android cell phone and would much rather pay a buck to avoid the ads from slowing down the game and intruding on the experience.

Either way, get your copy now from either the Apple App Store or the Android Marketplace. The sooner you do, the sooner the bugs will leave you alone.

Today, advertising and design agency Head First announced its brand-new iPhone App Super Twario, a game that turns your Twitter account into a side-scrolling platformer. Gamers play as hipster bunny Twario (who looks like a lame version of a Raving Rabbid), an inhabitant of a calm and serene forest decorated with tweets. Using the tilt-activated controls, it is the player’s job to guide Twario through the forest, where he can either create messages, tweet, or check out friends’ profiles and then retweet or respond to them. Along the way, gamers can earn achievements and points depending on how active they are in their Twitter account.

Basically, you can do everything in Super Twario that you can normally do in Twitter, but with an arbitrary point system and leaderboards. Oh, and it has a cute little bunny. By the way, am I the only one who saw the title of this game and immediately thought of oh, I don’t know… Super Mario??? How is this even legal? After much Googling, it doesn’t appear Nintendo even has a problem with this; there’s not even a hint of a cease-and-desist order. But these Head First guys are not stupid. Shoot a monkey, they’re in marketing! The fastest way to a consumer’s heart is familiarity, and they were damn smart to remind buyers of a beloved character while avoiding legal trouble with Nintendo. Bra-vo.

You know, as someone who no longer has a Twitter account (I gave up after my followers topped out at eight) and as someone who hates redundancy and unnecessary things, I cannot see the logic in buying this app. It’s just a slower, more pain-in-the-ass way to use Twitter.

“Hey, I want to tweet something. Lemme just pull out my iPhone, load this game, log-in, guide this stupid bunny to the end of a forest, jump on a log, click create message, type something, send it, and then stand there doing absolutely nothing else.“

Or you can send a tweet from your phone in four seconds! Congratulations, you spent two bucks on something that you can do for free! Bottled water, anybody? Aside from the redundancy issue, did they really think Twitter was so boring that they needed to turn it into a game? You send and receive messages in a matter of seconds. If you need more stimulation that that, you have serious ADD. Go outside and ride a bike. I may find this game to be close to pointless, but for those of you who may not, you can buy Super Twario here.

And for gameplay footage of Twario literally just wandering in the forest, check out this video:

I’m going to start this off by being completely honest and saying I’ve never even heard of Gubble until I saw an announcement that an HD version of it would be releasing on the iPad, appropriately titled Gubble HD. Apparently, Actual Entertainment debuted this game way back in ’96 on the PC/Mac and PlayStation, and a lot of people played it. I must’ve been asleep or something, because I sure as hell was never aware of its existence. At any rate, this is a true HD remake specifically for the iPhone and iPad that will retain the original music and sound effects while utilizing the touch controls Apple products are well-known for.

Gubble HD is described as a “family-oriented non-violent action arcade game”, which features five worlds and over sixty levels, and is made for gamers of all ages! You play as Gubble D. Gleep, a purple alien that looks suspiciously like the Reddit Alien (but rendered in 3D graphics and purple), and he has a funny voice. The object of the game is to disassemble structures using a variety of tools to ensure that all hardware (such as screws, nails, bolts, etc) is removed on each level. The game was originally developed by Franz Lanzinger, famous for Crystal Castles (an Atari game released in ’83, not the awesome electro band from Canada) and Eric Ginner (who is supposedly a famous arcade game player). And entertainingly enough, Ginner, who did most of the coding on the original game, said he was able to use most of the original code for the remake. It’s strange to think that our mobile devices today are as powerful as a home gaming console fifteen years ago…

That about sums everything up; I’ll leave you all with a couple of screenshots, a gameplay trailer, and the knowledge that, even if I had an iPhone/iPad, I probably wouldn’t play this game. Just sayin’.

Considering the lack of on screen directional pad and emphasis on touch rotation and optional tilt control, I’m excited to give this one a shot. Full details will be announced at the Cave Festival 2010 Summer Event August 14 at Akihabara.

So today happens to be an extremely slow news day, and you know what happens on extremely slow news days? IPHONE APP REVIEWS!!! Today we’ll look at Paper Toss by Backflip Studios, currently the #1 Free App on the App Store. Of course we can’t just do a normal review, that would be too boring! Today’s review is done in the style of a game journalist who goes off on tangents.

Also if you find this stuff exciting you might want to check out Golgocast, our new podcast.

So today we’re looking at Backflip Studios’ exciting paper tossing simulator, Paper Toss. The basic goal of Paper Toss is to toss a wadded piece of paper into the onscreen trashcan. Every successful toss gains you one point, and if you keep shooting without missing your score increases. This seemingly simple gameplay does remind me of a story though. I was working my first Corporate job, a simple job that only had me filing and answering phones. One day I was engaging in the same activity that this game simulates and my boss walks in. My boss was an older woman, I’d say around 50 years old, who had greying wispy hair which fell to her man-like shoulders. Her face was that of a snapping turtle, her eyes sharp and piercing, and her build was that of a board. She wasn’t the nicest woman in the world, but that day proved to be different. Or I thought. She saw me throwing paper wads in a trashcan and fired me. I then found another job cleaning rotary phones for the grandson of Thomas Edison, but that’s another story altogether.

Now where were we.

There are three difficulties, easy, medium, and hard. These three difficulties dictate how far away the trashcan will be, and also increase the force of the fan. I haven’t mentioned the fan before, everytime you go to shoot the fan has a specific wind speed and direction. This speed can be anywhere from .08 to 5.8, and affects how you will take your shot. While .7 does not really affect you on easy and medium, on hard you will have to take it into account when you take your shot. You can also submit your high scores online, but please be careful if you do. I got into an argument with someone I beat in a PvP match once, and they found out where I lived. One night I heard footsteps and saw three guys in my backyard with baseball bats approaching my backdoor. Having just seen Batman Beings I followed the teachings of Ra’s Al Ghul and stuck to the shadows. When the first one passed by me I clocked him in the back of the head with a blackjack, but as he fell another heard and came towards me. I quickly dispatched the second intruder with an open palm to the sternum followed by a vicious uppercut. I then came upon the third one in my living room, he saw me coming in so we immediately squared off. As we were about to fight I saw he employed the Laughing Turtle style of Kung-Fu which is the natural counter to my Shifting Fox style. Shortly after that the police arrived so we never had to fight, but I did have to serve a couple years in prison on a manslaughter rap (I hit the first guy a bit too hard).

Paper Toss definitely deserves its Number 1 spot on the App Store, you generally don’t find a quality free App that is this much fun. Below are some screens if you care to see what it looks like, but really if you have an iPhone you should just download it.
