Gamescom 2010 brought us our first look at Tekken x Street Fighter. Harada qualified these images by reminding fans that they are very rough and very early but a good example of the quality and effort the Tekken team will be applying to Capcom’s beloved fighters.

I’m sure more work will go into each Street Fighter favorite appearing in TxSF, but for a first draft I think it looks a lot like Ryu if he lived in the world of Tekken. Unfortunately there wasn’t much more to see from the director of the Tekken series, but he promised more will be teased via his Twitter account.

Harada has mentioned that it will most likely take his team much longer to release TxSF, as well as to avoid direct competition in sales with its counter part, so we shouldn’t expect an actual final build until well into 2012 or even 2013. It is also rumored that the Tekken team has been working on Tekken 7 for quite a while and that is the real cause for the delay. For fans of Namco fighters, the wait will probably be worth if it we get Tekken 7 or even Soul Calibur 5 in the meantime.

We got to see a taste of Street Fighter x Tekken at SDCC 2010. Now it’s Harada’s turn to run the show and reveal Tekken x Street Fighter. He and Yoshinoro Ono, Street Fighter series producer, will take the stage in Cologne, Germany, at GamesCom on August 19th. There will also be on-stage tournaments for SSF4 and Tekken 6, with competitors picked at random by Harada and Ono themselves.

For those in Cologne, the event is open to the public and takes place at 2:00 PM CET in the Konrad-Adenauer-Saal of the Kölnmesse. Attendees will all receive exclusive Tekken x Street Fighter swag with special prizes going to the tournament winners for each game. Be sure to follow Ono-san and Harada-san on Twitter for more info (and amusing banter).

What I found most entertaining about the announcement was the official back-and-forth between the producers. Take a gander at this:

Ono, Street Fighter Series Producer – “Our gathering of Street Fighter fans at the special occasion of ComiCon in San Diego was marred when Harada pathetically attempted to bribe everyone present with free copies of his games. Capcom, however, is an honorable company. We don’t just crash other companies’ events. So I’ve properly notified in advance that I will participate in the TEKKEN fan event planned for GamesCom. Since it is by invitation of the TEKKEN team, I expect Harada to have various underhanded surprises planned. Knowing this, I still plan to participate in the event while overcoming any obstacles he may have planned so that I can show them what a real fighting game is all about. I’ll also take with me the shaving oil I received from Hakan and the shaving razor from Vega so that I can erase that overgrown beard of Harada’s, exposing that baby face to go with his childish actions. It should turn out to be a great party!”

Harada, Tekken Series Producer – “After releasing Street Fighter III: Third Strike in 1999, Ono disappeared from the fighting game scene. Even though there were many requests for a sequel from fighting game fans, and even veteran fighting game developers like myself, Ono, Ryu, Chun Li, and crew failed to show their faces for 10 years. When they do finally show after a blank of 10 years, they don’t even bother to say a few words to the Mishima Zaibatsu, who helped maintain the fighting game scene for the 10 years they were gone. Not only that, they flee Japan to have their little gathering of fanboys at ComiCon in San Diego. So I made a sudden appearance at their little event, handed out a few free games to gain favor, and delivered a challenge to Ono. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to settle things at ComiCon but I’ll face him again this time in Europe – at Cologne! Blows are exchanged in place of civilities – that’s how it’s done at the Mishima Zaibatsu. ”

My guess as to what TxSF will look like.

For those who don’t know already, TxSF will feature Street Fighter characters in the Tekken 6 game engine, fighting under the rules of the Tekken system (and vice versa for SFxT). Tekken x Street Fighter and Street Fighter x Tekken are both loosely slated for a 2012 release and will be available for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

P.S. Don’t forget, it’s Tekken [cross] Street Fighter and Street Fighter [cross] Tekken. Harada will beat your monkey-ass if you say “ecks” and Ono has vowed a tireless vendetta to anyone who calls it “versus”… so be warned.

SDCC brought fighting game fans one of the biggest surprise announcements since (zOMG) Street Fighter IV. Not only is Capcom working with Namco to produce a Street Fighter x Tekken cross-over fighter, Namco is producing their own versus game, Tekken x Street Fighter, presumably using the Tekken 6 engine. Both games are expected to have tag-team fighting and team-up super moves, and both are loosely scheduled for a 2012 release.

Capcom is already working feverishly on Marvel vs Capcom 3, but managed to put together a proof of concept teaser for fans. The announcement came at Capcom’s “Street Fighter Mania! SSFIV and Beyond” panel. Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono was stopped during his Q&A session once he asked where fans wanted to see the Street Fighter franchise go in the future. Katsuhiro Harada, producer of the Tekken series for Namco, stood and joined Ono at the speakers’ table to offer a challenge.

Ono has since mentioned that these games have been on the table for over a year but only began development in the past few months. He said neither side is assisting the other and each company has full creative control over how they handle the characters. Ono fully expects Capcom’s version to be ready long before Namco’s.

Famitsu was able to get a few answers out of Ono as he returned to Japan. So far, Ono only confirmed the appearance of the four characters featured in the teaser gameplay video, but said it would surprise him if either game had a smaller roster than Tekken 6 or Super Street Fighter IV. He also hinted that there may be alternate versions of Street Fighter characters to help balance the match-ups.

Ono said he’s aiming for 2 on 2 gameplay, stating that after seeing MvC3′s 3 on 3 fights, he realized he’s too old to handle that much chaos on screen. Gameplay of each company’s release will be very similar to current SF and Tekken releases and should feel very familiar to fans of each. He hinted at adding assists to help add some variety to his own project.

In regards to collaboration, Ono said that neither company is sharing 3D models or design assets and are going to recreate each character as an homage to their strengths and assets they’re known for. He joked that Namco wouldn’t know one way or the other if Capcom decided to make Nina appear naked in the game, but the same could apply to Chun-Li.

Ono has said not to expect any updates from Capcom until Captivate in April 2011, but with the recent string of leaks that have proven to be true, we’ll see how well they keep this under wraps.
