Review – Portal 2

Review – Portal 2

The release of Portal 2, much like the game itself, was a veritable overload of hype, frustration, and amazement. Those of you familiar with the original Portal remember the spectacularly positive critical response after its release, but no one could have expected the exceptional level of awesome that is found in Portal 2. As Doug Lombardi, director of marketing at Valve so eloquently put it, “Portal was a test bed. Portal 2 is a game.”

Portal 2 Will Not Be “Game of the Year”

Portal 2 Will Not Be “Game of the Year”

Our actual review of Portal 2 should be up sometime soon once Mikey finishes it, but I want to get my feelings out on the table about what some other people are already saying about the game. I want to make sure that everybody knows that I really really like Portal 2 and think its a great game that I believe everybody should play at some point. But, what has bothered me the most in the past week is the vast amount of sites/publications that are already declaring Portal 2 as a “Game of the Year“.

Valve wants you to play Portal 2 early… and to take your money! (Not in that order)

Valve wants you to play Portal 2 early… and to take your money! (Not in that order)

All right! Stop whatcha doin’ ’cause Valve’s about to ruin the plans that you had for the weekend! Okay, that wasn’t nearly as smooth as I intended, but FUCK IT, TODAY IS A GLORIOUS DAY!!! Valve, god bless their capatalistic asses, have decided to give the world what its been demanding… PORTAL 2, EARLY!!! How you ask? Why it’s simple, and quite probably the solution to every problem in the universe… JUST THROW A BUNCH OF MONEY AT IT! The deal works like this; you jump on Steam, pick up the The Potato Sack indie bundle, play the shit out of those games, and tell lots of friends to do the same. The more peeps we get playing, the faster this counter (http://www.aperturescience.com/glados@home/) drops and the quicker I get to be playing.

I’m not sure how many people correlate to what percentage of time is taken off the clock, so we all need to get on this! My best guess is that it’ll unlock sometime tonight if you’ve pre-ordered. So enough talk, just get out there and play, I’m tired of waiting… I want to see my Chell again… I miss her, and I heard she once go busy in a Burger King bathroom. What a freak.

Portal 2 Co-Op Robots Get Names!

At Pax this past year, Valve revealed some of the first Co-Op footage of the upcoming Portal 2. The trailer showed off a Laurel and Hardy’esq pair of robots portal-jumpin’ their way straight through a series of dangerous obstacles. Well, finally our soon to be beloved dynamic-duo, have revealed their names. The fat little blue-eyed robot is Atlas, and the lanky red-eyed one is P-body… freakin’ glorious! Leave it to Valve to get me hyped about something as simple as the reveal of character names. I’m still incredibly pissed about the delay, but the thought of the carnage a team of portal gun wielding robots can cause is just in incredible to put in to words… *mental image… smile… then frown*. Sigh, is it 2011 yet?

Portal 2 Takes The Cake

Portal 2 Takes The Cake

Valve is wrapping up Portal 2 and leaving more than scraps on the cutting room floor.  The footage from E3 showed the return of GLaDOS and the rebuilding process of the Aperture Science testing facility.  What we know for sure is that the campaign will be much longer, you will have a helpful companion to talk to, and the cake is still a lie.  Valve writers Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek told the team from 1UP, during their cross country tour, that there will be a multiplayer mode, but only co-operative game play.  They originally tested out a competitive multiplayer mode in which one player would attempt to solve a puzzle while the opponent tries to stop them by any portal possible.  Erik Wolpaw said that it started out fun, engaging a lot of the fun aspects of portal, but after a few seconds it became utter chaos and was scraped for impracticality.
